What is PTSD?

What are the symptoms of PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder causes a variety of psychological, emotional, physical, and behavioral symptoms. Each individual experiences PTSD symptoms differently in terms of severity, length, and onset. 3. Physical and emotional reactivity

PTSD is a psychiatric disorder, so it is bound to have various physical and emotional consequences. This includes the following:

  • Anger, irritability, or hypervigilance
  • Aggressiveness 
  • Reckless or self-destructive behavior, including self-harm, drugs, and excessive drinking. 
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Easily startled, frightened, and always feeling on edge or tense.

4. Changes in mood and cognition

What causes PTSD?

One of the main causes of PTSD is exposure to a traumatic event. A traumatic event is an occurrence that creates a huge amount of stress as well as feelings of fear, danger, and helplessness. It is something that causes physical, psychological, and emotional harm to an individual. 

Every person has a different perception of each situation, so what’s traumatic to someone may not be as significant to another. That’s why there are a lot of situations that can cause PTSD. Some of the most common ones include the following:

  • Serious vehicular accidents
  • Rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment.
  • Experiencing abuse, harassment, or bullying.

  • Experiencing repeated or extreme exposure to aversive details of the traumatic event(s) (e.g., first responders collecting human remains; police officers repeatedly exposed to details of child abuse).


Who is at risk of developing PTSD?

Anyone can develop post-traumatic stress disorder, regardless of age, gender, occupation, and social status. However, certain things can increase an individual’s risk of getting PTSD, such as the following:

  • A person who experienced or witnessed a traumatic circumstance.
  • A person with a history of physical, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse.
  • A person diagnosed with a mental illness, such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
  • A person with a family history or genes increases their risk of having PTSD. 
  • A person with a history of substance or drug abuse.
  • A person who does not receive a healthy dose of social support from their environment.
  • A person with low levels of psychological functioning, such as poor coping skills.
  • A person dealing with ongoing stress, for example financial or academic stress.

How is PTSD diagnosed?

  4. avoidance symptoms
